“Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.”
Proverbs 27:17 KJV
Often times this verse is used in a positive light in our modern times. But having watched iron being forged into any type of item you begin to see that only through the iron being malleable by being put through fire does the iron begin to be changed.
When iron is cold it can not be changed into the design it was intended to be. But the fire brings out the impurities that need to be removed.
Our heart can likened to the iron in it that needs to be malleable and teachable. When we see our hearts are hardened to anyone, to change, to another’s viewpoint it can feel like fire as we become angry, upset, or even grieved.
It is in this time that our heart is in the fire that the impurities are rising to the top to be removed. It is our choice if these impurities are removed or if they become cold iron.
This quote from a life application study bible says it best
“There is a mental sharpness that comes from being around good people. And a meeting of minds can help people see their ideas with new clarity, refine them, and shape them into brilliant insights. This requires discussion partners who can challenge each other and stimulate thought—people who focus on the idea without involving their egos in the discussion; people who know how to attack the thought and not the the thinker”
How will people feel when they leave your presence? Will they feel the warmth of the fire to bring change or the coldness of the iron that is not malleable?
